The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company is set to carry out a trial sailing to Larne this week as part of plans to explore improved sea links between the Isle of Man and the island of Ireland.

The test sailing, involving the Ben-my-Chree, will assess operational feasibility, port suitability, and sustainability for potential future services.

The company confirmed the move follows discussions highlighted during last month’s Isle of Man Government Conference, where officials outlined ambitions to strengthen travel and trade connections across the Irish Sea.

In a statement, the Steam Packet Company said:

“As part of our commitment to enhancing connectivity and providing more travel options for residents and visitors, we are exploring all options.

The sailing to Larne is purely a trial at this stage. No final decision has been made regarding the addition of the route to our schedule, or any other changes.”

The outcome of the test will help determine whether regular crossings between Douglas and Larne could form part of the Steam Packet’s long-term network.
